Budgets
Budgets let you set a monthly spending limit per category (Food, Transport, …). Open the Budgets tab.

Setting a budget
- Pick the month with the
‹/›arrows. - Find the category and swipe right (or tap Set limit) to open the category editor.
- Enter the limit under Monthly budget (optional) and tap Save.
A budget applies to the selected month only — next month you start fresh. The same category can have a different limit each month. Leaving the budget empty removes the limit for that category.
Custom categories
Categories are seeded with the defaults (Food, Transport, …). You can add your own:
- Tap the + (floating action button) on the Budgets tab.
- Enter a name, pick an icon, and optionally set a monthly budget.
- Tap Save.
The icon picker covers all Material icons — tap the icon row, then use the search box (e.g. type "car" for transport icons) or scroll the grid to find one.
Custom categories behave like the defaults everywhere: they appear in budget cards, transaction filters, detail-screen category chips, and Reports. You can give each one its own auto-classification keywords in Settings → Automation → Category keywords.
Reading a budget
Each category card shows:
- spent / limit and a progress bar — fills as you spend; turns red (error color) when over.
- Over by X — when you've exceeded the limit.
- No limit set · spent X — categories without a budget still show spend.
Foreign-currency spending is converted to your display currency with your exchange rates; unconverted rows are excluded and called out in a footnote below the list.
Cards are ordered by how much of the budget you've used: the closest to (or over) its limit comes first, ties are broken by actual spend, and categories without a budget come last.
Only completed expenses count toward a budget.
Editing / deleting
Swipe a card:
- Swipe right — open the editor (change the name and icon of a custom category, or the limit of any category). Default categories keep their names.
- Swipe left — delete, with a confirmation dialog. The behavior depends on the category:
- Default categories — the budget limit is removed; the category stays.
- Custom categories — the category is removed entirely, along with its budgets and keywords. Transactions that used it become uncategorised.
Notes
- Budgets are per category, per month — not global.
- Deleting a budget just removes the limit; it doesn't delete transactions.
- Deleting a custom category removes its budgets too, and existing transactions lose their category assignment.
