Transaction Detail

The transaction editor opens when you tap a row in Activity, from Home, from the review queue (Create transaction), or through the Add transaction Quick Settings tile.

Editing a transaction

The editor leads with money. Expense or Income comes first, then the large Amount field and its Currency field, the merchant, the always-visible Category row (avatar, name and status), and the date & time row. Tap the category row to change the category and status without expanding anything.

Everything optional lives in collapsible sections — Items, Note, Location, Attachments — that show a short summary of their current value while collapsed. The summary wraps onto a second line when your text size needs it, so values always show in full.

• Sections with existing content start expanded when you edit a saved transaction; a new transaction starts fully collapsed.
• Tap a section header to expand or collapse it.
• Save stays at the bottom of the screen, above the keyboard, even when optional sections are expanded. Its button grows with the label, so at large text the whole word stays readable instead of being clipped. Tap it when you're done, or use Done on the Merchant keyboard. Next from Amount moves to Merchant.
• If a value needs fixing, the editor focuses that field and opens Items when needed. The message clears as soon as you correct that field; other fields are never marked for it. Save waits for persistence to finish; errors keep your changes for retry.
• Existing transactions have a separate Delete button below the optional sections, with a confirmation dialog.

The currency field stays beside the amount when there is enough room. It keeps its position while you type a normal amount — the amount column has a stable reserve, so the currency control does not jump digit by digit. Tap it to open the currency list; the currency in use is ticked, and every option is a full-height row that reads its code. On narrow screens or with larger text, the field moves below the amount so the code stays readable. Resizing keeps your entered values, and a longer-than-normal amount still reflows instead of being shortened.

Leaving without saving

If you change a transaction and press toolbar or system Back, choose:

• Save to save your changes and leave. If a field needs correcting or saving fails, the editor stays open.
• Discard to leave without saving. Newly added files are removed; an existing transaction and its original files stay intact.
• Keep editing to return to your draft, including items, notes, location, and attachments.

An unchanged form leaves immediately. System Back dismisses the keyboard or an open picker/viewer before leaving the editor. Drafts and the confirmation survive screen rotation and are recovered after the app process is killed — for example while the camera or a file picker was in the foreground — so your unsaved amount, merchant, date, category, note, items and attachments come back, and the Save/Discard prompt still reflects that the draft is unsaved. An unusually large draft is recovered in part: over-long text or a very long amount may be cleared for you to re-enter, and items or attachments that could not be restored are dropped. The editor tells you when anything was dropped, and the warning stays if the app is killed again before you save or discard. A staged file that was already gone is dropped on its own, never the rest of your edits. Discarding never removes a file that an already-saved transaction uses, even if the app was killed right after saving and the draft was offered back to you. Files attached to a draft that is abandoned for a long time are reclaimed automatically.

Remembered categories

Changing the category of a merchant remembers your choice: future transactions from the same merchant (in the same bank app) are auto-categorized the same way. This takes priority over automatic keyword rules.

Itemization

Open the Items section to break a transaction into lines:

• Each line has an item name and a cost.
• A negative cost is a discount line (e.g. -2.50).
• The Items total line shows the sum as you type, including its currency.
• At narrow widths or large text, each item's cost and delete action move below the item name instead of overlapping it.
• If the item sum disagrees with the transaction Amount, a warning banner appears. The warning does not block saving — the transaction total is what counts toward budgets and reports.
• Saving replaces the transaction's item set in one go; deleting the transaction also deletes its items.

The code icon (top-right) shows the transaction exactly as it would be exported — the JSON preview includes resolved category and account names plus the captured location (lat/long, accuracy, provider, capture time) when one is attached. Attachments are not part of the export. Use Copy JSON to put it on the clipboard.

Receipt photos

Under Attachments, tap Take photo to capture a receipt with your phone's camera app:

• After the shot, the four corner handles are positioned automatically around the receipt — drag them if the outline is off, and use the rotate button for sideways shots.
• Confirming straightens the page (perspective correction) and attaches it as an image; the photo also appears as a thumbnail in the editor, below the optional sections. Tap the thumbnail (or Open) to view it; the viewer shows the file name and offers Zoom in, Zoom out, Reset view and four pan buttons as alternatives to pinch and drag. It does not read or extract text from the photo.
• If automatic detection can't find an edge, you start from a default rectangle in the middle of the frame instead — adjusting the corners always works.

Attachments

Add files to a transaction under Attachments:

• Supported types: txt, images, pdf, csv, xlsx, xls, docx, doc — via Add file, or a camera shot via Take photo (above). At large text the two add actions stack so both stay tappable.
• Each file is capped at 10 MB.
• Use Open on a saved attachment to view it read-only. Images reopen in the in-app viewer; supported non-images open in a compatible viewer app on this device. The viewer receives temporary read access to that one file only, with no write access and no copy saved by AutoBudget. If the file was removed or no viewer app can handle it, the editor says so instead of failing silently.
• Delete is separate from Open — viewing a file never changes or deletes it.
• Files are stored on this device only — never uploaded. Opening one in another app is your choice, and that app handles it under its own policy.
• Attachments are not included in CSV/JSON export.
• Deleting the transaction also deletes its attachments.

Location

When a transaction already has a location, the Location section opens with a passive offline map preview centred on the saved point (the section starts expanded for an existing located transaction). The exact coordinates stay listed below the preview. Edit location opens the full-screen picker; scrolling the form never pans or zooms the preview, and viewing it never reads your GPS. When there is no location, the section offers Choose location instead.

The picker itself:

• When the transaction has no location yet, the picker automatically centers on your device's last known position (once, when it opens).
• With map data available it is a real offline map: pan and zoom so the place you want sits under the center pin (or tap the locate button for your device's position), then Save. The map follows the app's light/dark theme.
• When coordinates are already set, the picker opens on those coordinates instead, and Clear location removes them right away — tap Save to keep the change.
• Without map data it falls back to a simple grid canvas — tap or drag to drop the pin.
• Enter coordinates opens a small form where you can type a latitude (-90 to 90) and longitude (-180 to 180). Invalid or out-of-range values stay in the form with a field message; a valid pair places the pin, and Save stores it. This works without location permission, a device fix or a map pack, and the same path is reachable with the keyboard or TalkBack.
• Street-level detail needs an offline map pack imported in Settings → Backup & data; the bundled overview shows only cities and major roads. In the preview this shows as a limited detail note; a missing or unreadable pack keeps the saved coordinates and says the map is unavailable, and a point outside the pack's area is called out rather than pretending it has been erased.
